S Lukthitikul, U Hatthakit

Abstract

This qualitative study aimed to describe and explain wound care for tsunami victims of nurses at hospitals in Phang Nga province. Informants were registered nurses who had clinical experience for at least a year and had experience in caring for tsunami victims since December 26, 2004 and for at least five days in the first week. There were 12 informants in the study. Data were collected using in-depth interviews. An interview guide developed by the researcher was used to guide the data collection conducted during March and June 2006. Data analysis was conducted using general qualitative analytic method. Nurses reflected their experiences in caring for wounds of tsunami victims in 5 categories: 1) manifestations and types of tsunami wounds; 2) management and caring for tsunami wounds; 3) follow-up care for tsunami wounds; 4) problems of tsunami wound care; and 5) lessons learned by nurses in caring for wounds of tsunami victims. Knowledge gained from direct experience of nurses in the study will help guide nurses in caring for tsunami wounds appropriately.
