P Chusongsang, B Wilirat

Abstract

Objective: To analyze and evaluate clinical chemistry blood values and study the incidence of low and high level values of Thais receiving a check-up at Songklanagarind Hospital in the year 2004.
Meterial and Methods: Data comprising sex, age and results of blood chemistry values from an automated Hitachi 917 analyzer: (glucose, BUN, creatinine, cholesterol, triglyceride, uric acid, AST/SGOT, ALT/SGPT and ALP) were collected and analyzed using the SPSS program.
Results: There were a total of 7,928, 3,081 males (38.9%) and 4,847 females (61.1%), with age ranging from 16–97 years. There were 579 (7.3%) aged < 35 and 7,349 (92.7%) aged ≥ 35 years. The average, standard deviation and the outof- normal range in males were higher than in females for all blood chemistry parameters except cholesterol and were mostly higher in the age group ≥ 35 than the age < 35 years. The proportions of out-of-normal range for lipids were high cholesterol 27.5 percent and triglyceride 31.7 percent.
Conclusion: The annual check up to determine clinical blood chemistry is important, necessary and helpful for the early diagnosis in order to reduce the prevalence and severity of associated diseases.
