Quality of drug administration by nurses in Songklanagarind Hospital
Abstract
The purposes of this study were to evaluate the quality of drug administration and to identify the problem and limitation of implementing the Drug Administration Standard. The sample consisted of 106 nurses working in in-patient units in Songklanagarind Hospital. Data were collected by using self-reported questionnaire regarding subjects' practices following 41 activities of 6 statements of the Drug Administration Standard (oral and injection) developed by Nursing Standard Commitee, Nursing Department, Songklanagarind Hospital. The results of the study showed that the quality of drug administration was good in 35 activities whereas 6 activities had lower quality than the Drug Administration Standard and should be improved. The 6 activities were: covering prepared drug with clean fabric, checking the expiration date of syringe before using it, informing patients about the reasons for taking drugs, allowing the patient to ask question about drugs they were given, explaining the process of drug administration, and asking the history of any drug allergies before giving it. The problems and limitations of implementing the Drug Administration Standard were (1) statements of the Drug Administration Standard were not clear, (2) work overload, (3) nurses were not aware of the importance of the Drug Administration Standard and, (4) inadequate equipment for drug administration.
