A Survey of Health Status among the Older Adults who Live in Muang District Nakhonratchasima Province
Abstract
More than 10% of the population in Thailand are over 60 years old. Older adults suffer from declining health status, are more dependent and require higher health care budgets. Living in the municipal areas may be advantageous in term of health care accessibility and health education. However, higher risks for non-communicable diseases have been reported.
Objective: The aims of this study were to explore the prevalence of health problems, and to explore life styles of the older adults in municipal areas. Material and Method: Survey research was adopted by using interviewing and questionnaires.
Results: Data were collected from 175 older adults from seven Tambons in Muang Nakhonratchasima district. The average age of the sample was 70.4 (standard deviation (S.D.)=7.51) years of age. The majority were female (61.7%), earning income from working (58.9%) with an average of 2,300 THB per month. The majority rated their health status as good (46.3) while 62.1% reported having chronic diseases such as hypertension, arthritis and back pain. Most of the older adults (93.1%) were able to access medical services whereas only half (51.3%) underwent an annual health check-up. For health problems, 29% had eye problems, 12.3% had urine incontinence and 11.9% encountered falls. Most of them were able to perform their own daily tasks (95.4%), able to use instruments (88.6%) and were of healthy mind (88.6%). However, almost 90% of the older adults drank tap water without boiling or filtering.
Conclusion: The results revealed that older adults in the municipal areas could access health care services and had good health status. However, their health promotion and prevention behaviors are questionable.
