Developing parents' ability to give their children sex education
Abstract
Objectives: To study ways to develop parents' ability to provide adequate sex education to their children, and to compare parents' abilities and the children's level of satisfaction in their parents' teaching before and after the training.
Research design: Participation action research
Materials and methods: The subjects were 80 parents and 80 children. The reliability of the questionnair inquiring about the ability of parents was 0.98 and the children's level of satisfaction was 0.97. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-test.
Results: The training for parents was in the form of a workshop, using a student-centered approach. The means of the parents' abilities and the levels of satisfaction before and after the training were significantly different (t = 5.65, p < 0.001; t = 2.84, p < 0.001 respectively). The parents' ability had improved in many aspects, notably accurate knowledge, courage in giving sex education, better understanding about children, and understanding that sex education was not something they should be ashamed of. The children were satisfied with their parents' efforts in many aspects: parents' views on sex education as more important, parents being more skillful in giving sex education, parents' ability to efficiently give advice about sexrelated issues, and parents being more understanding and trusting their children more.
Conclusion: The results of this study should be beneficial for health personnel and other people involved in sex education. Training based on workshops developed from this study can be used to develop parents' abilities in providing their children with sex education to enable them to have a safe and healthy sex life.
