Aree Kaeotawee, Janya Wongkittithaworn

Abstract

Objective: To determine the safety culture attitudes (SCA) of the operating room personnel in

Songklanagarind Hospital.

Materials and methods: From June to July 2009 we assessed the SCA with a Safety Attitudes Questionnaire-OR version in all operating room personnel. The Questionaire consisted of 58 items divided into 6 factors: teamwork climate, safety climate, stress recognition, perception of management, working climate, and job satisfaction. Scores are reported as means, standard deviations and percent-positive scores. The differences in the SCA scores between providers were assessed using Analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Results: The Questionaire response rate was 76.2% (343/450). The SCA of the operating room personnel across all worker types were moderate (mean scores: 57.6+8.3). Physicians, nurses and other providers had similar moderate SCA (mean scores: 50.8+8.6, 57.4+8.1 and 57.1+8.1) and they had the lowest SCA concerning their working climate (mean scores: 50.8+10.8, 50.5+10.4 and 52.6+12.5 respectively). The 3 types of providers had positive attitudes ranged from 37-67%. Nurses had the least positive attitudes about perception of management (37%). Analysis the SCA of providers across all factors showed significant difference about their safety climate, perception of management and job satisfaction.

Conclusion: All providers in the operating room setting had similar moderate SCA which comparinging of SCA among the different types of workers across all factors had significant difference.
