Assessment of Experience and Satisfaction with the 2-Month Rotating Internship in Pediatrics, Songklanagarind Hospital, Thailand
Abstract
Introduction: According to The Medical Council of Thailand requirements, a 2-month rotation in pediatrics is compulsory for any medical graduate doing an internship. Songklanagarind Hospital has been approved by the Medical Council as one of the hospitals qualified to offer the internship rotation since 1994.
Objective: To evaluate the self-assessment of the interns concerning their experience and satisfaction during their 2-month pediatric rotation.
Materials and methods: Interns who completed the 2-month pediatric rotation during the academic years 2004-2009, filled in a questionnaire using a Likert scale, ranging from 1-5.
Results: All interns agreed that the 2-month rotation in pediatrics was appropriate for the internship program with a Likert score of >4.00 of the full score of 5.00. The interns felt that they were involved in the decision making involving their patients and gained experience after finishing the rotation with a score of 3.80-4.26. They were also satisfied with the evaluation/feedback by pediatric residents/attending staff with a score level of 3.84-4.09. Although the interns felt that they were less involved in the academic conference with the lowest score of 2.93-3.48, they felt positively about their experience gained from attending the academic conference with the score of 3.80-4.00.
Conclusions: Overall, the interns rotating at the Pediatric Department in Songklanagarind Hospital expressed a high level of satisfaction with their 2-month rotation and after finishing it, were more confident in their ability to look after pediatric patients.
