A Survey of Confidence in Clinical Practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialists After Graduated Residency Training at Songklanagarind Hospital and the Satisfaction of their Supervisors.
Abstract
Objective: To survey the confidence level in terms of knowledge, clinical skills and communi- cation skill of the specialists who completed training at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Songklanagarind Hospital and also the satisfaction of the their supervisors.
Materials and methods: A 5-point Likert scale questionnaire was given to 94 specialists and 94 super- visors who had completed training at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology during the 1989-2010 academic years.
Results: There were 68 responders (72.34%) among the specialists and 60 responders (63.83%) among their supervisors. The specialists had high confidence in all aspects with overall score of 4.22±0.50. The specialists who graduated more than 5 years had a higher confidence level than those who graduated with less than or equal to 5 years of training only in his taking aspects. The graduate specialists who were the medical instructors had more confidence than general obstetricians only in the holistic care. The specialists were also assessed by the their supervisors in four aspects namely knowledge, clinical skills, responsibility and attitude, moral and ethical behavior. It revealed that no differences were found in all aspects between the graduates of greater than 5 years and those of less than 5 years. However, the specialists who were medical instructors had higher scores in the aspects of knowledge (p=0.046) and responsibility (p=0.038). Conclusions: The specialists in obstetrics and gynecology had a high level of confidence in clinical practice, and the satisfaction assessed by their supervisors were also high.
