Overtly Effeminate Male or Overtly Masculine Female Doctors from Patients’ and their Relatives’ Point of View

Abstract

Objective: To study the attitudes towards overtly effeminate male or overtly masculine female doctors from patients’ and their relatives’ point of view.

Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study was done to interview outpatients and their relatives attending Songklanagarind Hospital from April to October 2011 regarding to the attitudes towards overtly effeminate male or overtly masculine female doctors. The difference between patients’ and their relatives’ attitudes towards overtly effeminate male or overtly masculine female doctors were analyzed using matched pair analysis.

Results: Most patients and their relatives reported positive attitude toward overtly effeminate male doctors or overtly masculine female doctors. Except patients and their relatives who were male, Muslim, older age, and lower education had negative attitudes towards overtly effeminate male doctors or overtly masculine female doctors. There was no significant differences between patients’ and their relatives’ attitudes at 0.05 level of significance.

Conclusion: Most of the patients and their relatives had no negative attitudes towards overtly effeminate or masculine doctors.
